Abdisalam Ibrahim signs for Olympiacos

Late last night we confirmed the signing of Abdisalam Ibrahim from Manchester City.

Ibrahim is a young Norwegian (born Somalia) midfielder who has signed a contract for the next three and a half years.

He has been on loan at various clubs (most recently at Stromsgodset in Norway) and will now go on loan to Ergotelis until the end of the season.

Jan 5th to 15th - An update on the last 10 days

I haven't been able to write any updates or articles in the last ten days for various reasons (mainly hospital reasons) so I thought I'd best do a summary. During this time, we've played two matches - 1 cup and 1 league, winning the first and drawing the second. The cup game was played at home in Karaiskaki roughly seven days ago and saw us thrash Asteras Tripolis by a 4-1 scoreline. We now hold a three goal advantage ahead of the return leg and will almost certainly be anough to see us advance.
At the weekend, we drew against Atromitos 0-0 away in Peristeri. It was a slightly disappointing result for us but we're still clear at the top of the league by a vast amount so it's hardly a result which will cause us any serious problems. The most important thing from the match was the return of Kostas Mitroglou after a lengthy injury period.

More serious however is the case with Dimitris Siovas. He had been injured recently and had to undergo surgery in the last week. This means that he will be out of action for at least two months and reduces us to only two centrebacks on the team - Avraam (also seemingly not fit) and Manolas. At the weekend we had to use Bong as an emergency centreback because of the lack of cover. The rumours have it that we are desperately hunting for cover and probably will be signing someone this month. I'm not sure who this will be but I hope that we don't get ripped off by other clubs now that they know about our problems. So it would seem that the move to offload Carl Medjani was a little premature but on the other hand he was slow and had the same turning circle as the Titanic.

So this minor problem aside, it hasn't been the worst ten daysever. This weekend we play Levadiakos in Karaiskaki, lets see how we do then.

Atromitos 0-2 Olympiakos

Introduction
Todays match against Atromitos marked the end of a successfull season for Olympiakos and also the first of two times we would be playing Atromitos in the space of 7 days (we play them in the cup on Saturday 28th). The team we turned out was not the strongest available and several players were rested in advance of the cup. The game itself was more or less a dead match for us although we wouldn't particularly want to lose the match either.

First Half
The match didn't start brightly for us but we worked to take possession of the ball in the centre of the field, and after the first ten minutes we had started to control the game more confidently. Our first chance on goal came in the eleventh minute from a short range Diogo header which was unfortunately aimed directly at the keeper. In general, we were playing well and pressuring the opposition goalmouth but without scoring as yet and still susceptible to the odd Atromitos counter attack.

We continued with our aggressive gameplay, bringing the ball closer to the Atromitos net with Fetfatzidis having a fine effort saved off the line in the 30th minute. Fetfatzidis was also a very frustrating player to watch with his insistance of preferring to dribbling through three or four players rather than pass to a free teammate. We were almost caught out with an Atromitos counter attack in the 34th minute when Mitroglou broke through our defence but managed to recover when the same player slipped over in the box.
Nevertheless we continued with the pressure and came close again in the 41st minute with a shot from the box of the box courtesy of Fejsa which made the keeper stretch to push wide. This was the last action of note in the first half.

Second Half
The second half was only a minute old when we won a penalty for a foul on Diogo in the box. Fuster took the penalty but saw his effort saved (which was a good result since Diogo dived for the penalty in the first place). This did not stop us from keeping up the pressure on the Atromitos goal though and we kept a good attacking rate on the opposition area throughout the half. Fuster again came close in the 60th minute after an elaborate pass from Monje but saw his shot saved.
A minute later though and we scored the opening goal which we had been threatening all match. A free kick from 30 metres out was lobbed into the box, it eluded everyone apart from Marcano on the far side of the box. Marcano took the opportunity to shoot into the net from the tight angle and open the scoring.

Fetfatzidis scored the second goal after we managed to break through their defence with two players to their final defender. Giannis Fetfatzidis composed himself then lobbed the keeper beautifully to double the scoreline. Despite what I wrote earlier it was a lovely finish (but I still wish he'd pass more than trying to dribble umpteen opponents). Atromitos tried to instantly reply through Epstein and Tatos but luckily we stayed defensively firm to stop their chances (and even clear the ball off the line).

In the last period of the game, Atromitos came at us to try and get one goal back and save some face since they had been on the back foot for most of the match. We tended to be defending well but we were also penetrated a couple of times which led to Potouridis coming onto the pitch and replacing Makoun (giving us 5 at the back). We ended playing the game out in this formation and wound the clock down to the end of the match.

Summary
We had made a decent enough win after todays win although some of the plays did help remind of the thin nature of the squad and I still have some doubts on whether the likes of Diogo and Monje are good enough for anything but backup status. Fuster as well seemed wasteful on the ball and it may be that his injury earlier in the season has affected his gameplay even after regaining fitness. Still, it was a competent enough win and a good prelude to next weekends all important cup final.

Olympiakos 1-0 Tsatsoi (Cup Match)

It was Olympiakos against OFI at Karaiskaki earlier this evening. We faced OFI in the semi-finals of the cup and would need to dispatch them in a two legged fixture in order to advance to the final. As the league was more or less already won, this seemed to be our focus at the minute and offered a real chance to get a double this season, hence the strong lineup.

First Half
We started attacking straight from the start of the game and made our first real chance on the Tsatsoi goalmouth in the seventh minute with an Abdoun cross and Mirallas flick which just went wide of the net. Apart from this one chance though we didn't create the chances early on in the game and made some poor final passes in the box.  Djebbour came painstakingly close in the 16th minute with a rebound attempt but found the ball smothered by the keeper before he got the final touch. It must be said though that the game was all one-way traffic at this stage and apart from some very desperate and frantic defending, OFI had done nothing.

The pressure continued throughout the first half but the problem of misplaced passes was holding us back. However our relentless pressure was paying off with some free kicks in great positions and the threat of a goal was always present. We continued to have some minor chances on goal and our continuing pressure was at least getting our team into the position to make chances on goal. We did need to improve though if we were going to win this game.

Second Half
We started off displaying the same amount of pressure as we had before the game but we also had the same lack of accuracy and finish too. We were by far the better team in the game but we just couldn't manage to get the goal that we were after. The lack of definite progress was very frustrating to see and it raised the real possibility of the game ending goalless - a poor situation for us. Djebbour and Fetfatzidis had their chances but again nothing...

The last portion of the game saw us continue to dominate possession and play around the Tsatsoi box but with the same lack of success as earlier. We had by now made all of our available substitutions and were playing as aggressively as possible. We did however get the all important goal after a cross into the box allowed Mellberg to get a header on the ball and into the net. The game finished after a further ten minutes of play and with the finish, we had taken a vital lead into the return leg.

Olympiakos 1-0 OFI
81' Mellberg

Olympiakos : Carroll, Torosidis, Mellberg, Marcano, Holebas, Maniatis (73' Fejsa), Orbaiz, Fuster (46' Fetfatzidis), Mirallas, Abdoun (62' Diogo), Djebbour

Crvena Zvezda - Banat 1-0 (cup)

Olympiakos 1-1 PAOK - 6th Cup Round 1st Leg

Todays match comes from the Karaiskaki stadium where we play PAOK in the 6th round of the cup. We play a two legged round this time and so a good result here will allow us to go to Toumba with an advantage. For this match, we see Nikopolidis back in goals for the first time in a couple of months.

The game starts off, although the game is delayed for a minute or so to clear the flares from the field. When the game does start we start off with the attacking play and seem to do well in this, getting close to scoring in the 5th minute. The game is then stopped again for a couple of minutes when Torosidis takes a knock in our own box. When the game is restarted again, we move the ball forward but as yet, we cannot get any opportunities on their goal. We have had a couple of corners in this opening fifteen minutes but nothing of any note.

After the opening 15 minutes of the game, we haven't settled as yet and we haven't stamped our authority on this game as yet. We have another stoppage after the whinging PAOK staff moan at the referee. PAOK have their first chance on goal in the 25th minute with a corner which threatened to go into the net, Nikopolidis having to save the ball from going into the net from the corner shot. The referee then decides to stop play for another time and we have another delay to the game.

We come close to scoring again in the 31st minute from a free kick which was subsequently shot against the post by Modesto and then cleared. Apart from this though, we are having some trouble in getting the ball forward and through to our attackers. PAOK are doing a job in closing down our midfielders and they are unfortunately intercepting a lot of our balls and then counter attacking. We do get another chance from a free kick knocked into the box, but Chalkias manages to get to the ball and claim it first.
We do however get the lead in the first of three minutes of extra time, a free kick was conceded to the extreme left hand side of the field. Ibagaza crossed the ball into the far end of the box where Modesto was waiting and smacked it into the goal with a cracking header to gain the lead. The game then breaks after 3 minutes of extra time given for the multiple stops the referee has subjected us to.

PAOK have the first chance of the second half with a free kick on goal which has to be turned behind for a corner. In reply, we do more attacking play but similar to the first half, we have trouble in threading the ball through the midfield. PAOK do have two more corners and a free kick early on in the half before we manage to clear the ball from our area. We then manage to grab a couple of corners of our own causing PAOK some serious trouble in their defence. Mirallas has a superb opportunity to get a second goal but his crack at the net was saved by Chalkias.

We seem to be firmly in control of the game now, PAOK are surrendering control of the possession and we are taking advantage and getting forward whenever possible. We make our first substitution in the 63rd minute with Jose Holebas replacing Albert Riera. We still have some trouble in breaking through their defence from open play but we are running riot in set-plays. Pantelic has an effort on goal knocked against the crossbar and we go close to getting the second goal again. We are doing the majority of our attacks through the wings and to help freshen up the tempo, we replace Dennis Rommedahl with Giannis Fetfatzidis in the 72nd minute. We have another attempt on goal through a Torosidis header but his attempt is found off target and harmlessly passes the goalmouth.

The game is now in the final 15 minutes of the match and we continue with the attacking play although PAOK have now also decided to come out of their shell for the last quarter hour of normal time. We have more chances on their goal but then we have as goal by Vierinha which screws up our chances in the tie. The goal was an over-the-top pass sent across past Avraam Papadopoulos who seemed unable to recover and effectively defend the pass. The goal was completely against the run of play but leaves us with a real problem now. We make our third and final chance with Raul Bravo being replaced with Jaouod Zairi.
We still manage to miss more chances with Torosidis missing an open goal and hitting the post from half a metre out. What's more annoying is that Zairi hit the post first when making the initial shot. This is the fourth time we've hit the posts or crossbar today. The game finishes after 3 minutes of extra time and we've really missed out on a chance to gain an advantage today.

Olympiakos 1-1 PAOK

PAOK : Chalkias, Contreras, Cirillo, Linen (82' Koytsianikoulis), Snauczner, Tsoukalas, Garcia, Fotakis, Ivic (75' Muslimovic), Vieirinha, Salpingidis (86 ' Balafas).

Asteras Tripolis 0-1 Olympiakos (Cup)

Olympiakos gained a win over Asteras Tripolis in todays game with a 1-0 scoreline and therefore passes through to round 6 of the Greek Cup. Despite being reduced to 10 players by the dismissal of Olof Mellberg, Olympiakos gained the victory and showed a measure of the skill and composure required to go far in the competition. It was a good game for us which unfortunately is not reflected in the scoreline, we had a lot of chances in the game and we tended to dominate possession and performed most of the attacking.

We started off in the usual 4-4-1-1 formation although with a very makeshift lineup (see below for list of players). Despite the lineup, we imposed ourselves well on our opponents and unfortunately we lost a number of chances to put ourselves forward in the match early on. In the first ten minutes, we saw good chances for goals from both Riera and Mirallas along with Pantelic just five minutes later. Unfortunately for us, the Tripolis keeper Degra had an impressive game and seemed to cope with our strikers and the shots we were creating.
As we got further into the half we saw chances from Ibagaza and Modesto, both of whom missed the goal. In fact, Modesto in particular missed a golden opportunity from only a couple of metres out. We also saw more chances from Ibagaza and Mirallas but despite all of our efforts, we could not manage to beat Degra in the Tripolis goals.

With regard to the second half, Olympiakos once again started the half well and created chances on the Asteras goals, the best of these coming in the 60th, 64th and 68th minutes from Riera, Mirallas and Pantelic respectively. However in the 78th minute, Mellberg received a second yellow card for a fairly innocuous looking challenge and was expelled from the pitch reducing us to 10 men for the final 12 minutes of normal time. Fortunately though, our domination of the game could not be halted and we finally managed to get the game winning goal.
The goal was created by the skill of Jaouod Zairi (a substitution for Galitsios) who made a great run from the right wing before making a low pass in the box itself to Ibagaza. Ibagaza took a first time shot and finally beat the keeper (86').
This was basically it for the match although we almost got a second goal through Mirallas but Degre's skill and good luck managed to deny us a second goal for the umpteenth time. The full time whistle sounded soon afterwards and so we won (quite convincingly) with just 10 men.

Olympiakos : Pardo, Modesto, A.Papadopoulos, Mellberg (Off 78'), Holebas, Galitsios (69' Zairi), Ibagaza, Hurtado, Riera (83' Potouridis), Pantelic (75' Fuster), Mirallas
